Tips for a short or longer stay on Koh Samui
One day on Koh Samui
Start your day with a nice, healthy breakfast in your Design Square villa or go to The Library at Chaweng Beach for a unique breakfast experience right on the beach. Do you prefer a delicious English Breakfast, with all traditional elements included? Then definitely check out The Islander, also at the lovely Chaweng Beach. After breakfast, take a stroll down the beach of Chaweng and make sure to have a well-deserved break at Reggae beachbar to enjoy a fresh coconutshake. Next, take a short trip with the jetski and enjoy an amazing lunch at an open sala on the beach at Muang Kulaypan.
One of the best ways to discover the island is by motorbike. Renting a scooter should not cost you more than approximately 250 THB/day. Koh Samui may be Thailand’s third biggest island, it is only 25 km long. With a total area of just under 250 km2 and a 55 km long ringroad covering the entire island, a motorbike is the perfect mode of transportation for discovering the island in just a few hours.
When you go from Chaweng in the direction of Bo Phut, do not forget to make a stop at Big Buddha for a visit to the gorgeous temple. Continue in the Nathon, pass by Maenam Beach make a refreshing stop at the waterfalls Hin Lad and Namuang.
After, go to the most southern village of the island, Thong Krut. Via Bang Kao and Hua Thanon you will arrive at Lamai Beach. Do not forget to make a stop at Hin Ta and Hin Yai, Koh Samui’s most famous rock formation. After Lamai Beach, you arrive back at Chaweng Beach where you can cool off with a refreshing ice cream banana pancake at Khaosan restaurant.
Would you like to explore the island from a different point of view? Great idea! You can rent a motoryacht with a captain to discover Koh Samui from sea.
After a busy day, you sure deserve a nice dinner. A perfect place for a lovely meal is La Dolce Vita . This cosy restaurant is run by Kathrin and Joe, a Thai-Norwegian couple. They put together an excellent menut with international influences (the king prawns are devine!) as wel ass Italian-inspired dishes (I absolutely love their spaghetti with crab) and traditional Thai cooking (definitely try the Tom Yam Khung and Tom Ka Kai).
After dinner, Chaweng Beach Road is the ideal place to digest your food. With dozens of shops the Beach Road is the ideal walking route for a relaxed, yet vibrant after-dinner stroll. Definitely take a look at Try-Out, one of Koh Samui’s finest boutiques with lovely owner Ann always ready to help you pick the right outfit. Her boutique is by far the nicest on the Island.
When the night comes, soi Green Mango (Thai for Green Mango Street) is thé place to be. Start of your night at Solo Bar where you can enjoy live percussion or saxophone music. Next, chill out and relax with a nice drink at Ark Bar. Do you enjoy a nice game of snooker? Then make a small stop at Grace’s Smile Bar where you can challenge khun Lay for a game of snooker.
Around midnight it is time to head off to the Green Mango Club, by far one of the most famous clubs around the island. When the party ends at Green Mango (around 3AM), you can follow the crowd to Sound Club, only 50 meters by foot from the Green Mango Club. Needless to say this is the best place for a great afterparty!
As you will realise by now: one day in Koh Samui… it is not enough! To postpone your flight, one address: Bangkok Airways with its mainquarters ideally located on the ringroad right in front of the Design Square plot.
One week on Koh Samui
To enjoy a delicious breakfast, full of variety, you can do your shopping yourself at one of the three big markets in the area around Design Square Koh Samui, Tesco Lotus, Big C and Makro. Going by motorbike might not be so useful with all your groceries. That is why I would suggest you take a tuktuk. The driver will bring you there for 50 THB. Taking a taxi is also an option, but don’t expect the driver to put the meter on. On Koh Samui it is common practice to agree on a price beforehand. Taking a taxi to one of the grocery stores should only cost you around 200 THB. Tops Market at the Chaweng Beach Road also has a broad and daily fresh supply. For fresh bread, you can go to the French Butchery or Il Mulino Italian Bakery (0 7723 9031). A bit further from Design Square in Lamai at The Baker’s Oven English Bakery and Schmidt. Other breakfastfacilities nearto Design Square are Café Uno, Starbucks , Tiamo, Spago, Au Café Des Arts & Bellevue Bar.
During the daytime I would suggest you take a diving initiation . Thailand is considered one of the top destinations when it comes to diving and snorkeling at Koh Tao, an island in the same archipelago as Koh Samui. At Chaweng Beach Road you will find many shops where you can arrange for a diving trip also.
Are you super fit? Then don’t hesitate to participate in a thai boxing class. The Super Pro Samui is located in the same street leading up to Design Square. At Super Pro you can learn the art of thai boxing, or you can use the well-equiped facility room for a fitness workout. Khun Sharoon will be happy to guide you. He is well-reputed all around the world.
Would you rather work less agressive on your strenghts? Then yoga is thé choice for you. Yoga is very popular on Koh Samui and there are quite a few places throughout the island. I would suggest you take a look at the Bikram Yoga Studio.
Would you rather compete in a group sport? Sure, why not. You can always join for a game of indoor soccer at the Samui Arena. You can play there as a team or just join another one at the well-known Soccer Buffet, where you will be put with a Thai or internationally mixed mini soccer team.
Visiting a local market is always great fun when on holiday. I recommend you three places in Chaweng: Laem Din Market, Chaweng Fresh Market and Pank Bua Fresh Market.
Are you looking for a beauty treatment or medical surgery, then you won’t have to go far from our Design Square villa. Exactly 400 meters in front of the Design Square area is the highly-reputed Bangkok Samui Hospital where you can go for all sort of treatment with a broad spectrum of respected doctors. All doctors can follow-up on your medical condition from within the villa. They make housecalls because the plot is so near to the hospital.
If you are in need of medicine and you need to find a pharmacist, there are many places you can go. I suggest you go to Boots or Watsons on Chaweng Beach Road. Don’t be deceived by the names of these places. It is commong practice on Koh Samui to double or even triple the prices in shops with signs ‘Pharmacie’. Boots as well as Watsons do not engage in the practices and they both have diplomated in-house pharmacists.
It is very likely that you – after experiencing the overwhelming charm of this superb island- want to become a home owner on Koh Samui. In that case, I (email@example.com or 0 84 11 22 157) will be glad to help you and we’ll discuss your needs and wishes over a café latte.
And why not halt at the excellent La Dolce Vita? Outside of Chaweng I highly recommend Fisherman’s Village. For a great meal you are also invited at Sala Samui or Six Senses at the breathtaking Dining on the Rocks.
At nightfall it might be a good opportunity for you to have a tailormade suit or dress made. At the Chaweng Beach Road you will find a dozain of shops where you can have custommade clothes made. Next to that you can also find many jewelry shops and art galeries.
For a live ladyboy show, you can go to Christy’s Cabaret and the Moulin Rouge. For a real thai fighting night you are invited at Chaweng Stadium, soi Reggea Pub or soi Solo Bar.
Kick of your night at Reggea Pub or Q Bar, one of the bars with thé best view in Koh Samui.
At soi Green Mango you can start in Henri’s Bar.
Are you so lucky to have a full moon during your stay? Then definitely don’t miss out on experiencing a Full Moon Party. No full moon during your stay? Don’t worry! There are plenty of opportunities to experience this magical dance event, at a Half Moon Party or a Black Moon Party. A must when visiting Koh Samui!

One night in Bangkok
The Millenium Hilton Bangkok Hotel is perfectly located at the riverside, with amazing views included. The view from the bar is breahtaking and the suites are well-maintained and affordable.
Did you come to Bangkok for a nice shopping spree? Then the Pathumwan Princess Hotel is the place for you. It is located in one of the biggest shopping centers in Bangkok. Via the groundfloor of the Pathumwan you can walk directly to MBK, a huge shopping center that is also connected to Discovery, the Siam Center and the luxurious Paragon.
The Paragon and Siam Ocean World are both childrens’ paradises. For the big children among us, it is definitely worth taking a look on the second floor of Siam Ocean World where there is a massive showroom for luxury cars.
Sukhumvit is probably the best-known street in all of Bangkok. It offers anything and everything you are looking for.
The Sofitel is a great location to start exploring this street.
If you want to experience what Thailand was like when it was still Siam, go to the Oriental.
Are you keen on showing off your best dancemoves? Then Novotel at Siam Square has the perfect dancefloor for you. You can start off your night here at club CM2 and head off to various other clubs from this point.
I strongly suggest a visit to Wat Pho, the temple of the lying buddha, and the Grand Palace. You can reach these places by tuktuk or by public taxi (make sure to have the meter put on!). If you like more culture after that, take the BTS from Chidlom to Siam Square and visit the BACC (Bangkok Art & Culture Centre).
Are you in Bangkok during the weekend? Then definitely do not miss out on Chatuchak. This amazing weekend market is not only overwhelming by supply, but also by temperature, so be prepared!
For dinner I have three stunning places to recommend. The first is located in Sukhumvit on Soi 11. Bed Supperclub is not only ultramodern, it is also a real culinary treasure. About a hundred metres from Bed Supperclub, you will find Q Bar. Here, you can combine excellent food with great entertainment.
Not afraid of heights? Then definitely do not miss out on Vertigo, one of the highest open air restaurants in the world. This once in a lifetime dining experience is located on the top floor of the Banyan Tree Resort.
After dinner, visit Patpong, very near to Vertigo. This amazing night market offers a lot of knock-off clothing and accessories, as well as a ton of erotic shows, which you will find at the first floor of most of the gogo-bars.
For a great night, the bars at Khaosan Road are the place to be. Or put on your nicest dancing shoes and show off your moves at RCA, one of the most popular clubs in Bangkok. If your feet are sore from all that dancing, do not hesitate to get a foot massage at Khaosan Road. Cheap, fast and very relaxing!
Easy access to many other great destinations in Asia
Every year, I spend around 6 months in Thailand. Although this country has stolen my heart, I also discovered many other great destinations in Asia. Bangkok is ideally located to discover other countries.
Ten must-see destinations:
Dinner at Spoon, run by Alain Ducasse
Dinner at Verre, run by Gorden Ramsey.
Or enjoy an exclusive meal in one of the six different restaurants at the renowned Burj Al Arab.
Visit the largerst interior fair in the world at Guangzhou.
Have a party at The Sanctuary.
Relax on a floating raft at Matabungkay.
Travel from the north to the south, and discover the broad history of this great country, all while enjoying the unique scenery. Make sure to stop at Halong Bay: to me one of the most amazing places in the world.
Visit Angkor Wat, one of the greatest historical sites in SE-Asia.
Enjoy an adventurous night in a treehouse or sleep peacefully right above the sea.
Visit the grandest art site in the world at Naoshima and the renowned Chichu museum.
